Greek Easter Traditions

Kali Anastasi! Kalo Pascha! Dying eggs red for Easter are part of the tradition as much as some other foods made for the Easter menu such as lamb. Sometimes, red eggs are even baked into the loaves of the Greek Sweet Bread as known as “Tsoureki”. The tradition of dying eggs red began in the early days of Christianity. The color red is used to symbolize the blood of Christ and the egg itself represents His tomb. When the eggs are cracked, it represents His resurrection. One person says “Christ has Risen!” then the other person replies “Truly He has Risen!” This tradition is one that is well known throughout the Orthodox Easter traditions. The last person at the table to remain with their egg in tact is said to have “Good Luck” for the year. Some other Greek Easter traditions include the making of Tsourekia, Kooulourakia (Greek Butter Cookies), Kourambiedes, lamb, and the Easter soup known as '“margaritsa.” For more about Greek Easter Traditions you can visit: www.greekboston.com/greekeastertraditions
